Diabetes Team Meeting

We had to go to the school this afternoon and meet with the diabetes team. It went really well, actually and all the teachers are just right on board with E's diabetes care plan. It was great. The PE teacher sat in, too. There is another boy, who is K's age, who has diabetes, too. He has a pump and he was showing E how it worked and telling him how much he liked it and all.

I thought it was great to hear from his mom, too, how much they like it and how much easier it is. E has not been interested in a pump at all. But maybe now that he has seen a kid with one, he will think about it?

He has only seen adults with pumps before, so to see a kid with a pump was a good thing. What was so awesome, too, is that his glucose meter is bluetoothed to his pump, so when he checks his sugar, the information is automatically sent to the pump. Then he just puts in how many carbs he eats and the insulin is delivered through the site and into his body! Wow! I was impressed!

Type 1 Diabetes

My son was diagnosed September 1, 2006 with Type 1 Diabetes. We have been doing very good getting on a routine and he doesn't complain too much about all the finger pricks and the shots (but he only gets 1-2 shots a day right now).

Last night we were at the chinese restaurant we like to go to (his favorite) and he put a coin in the buddah and rubbed it's belly and said "I wish I didn't have diabetes". *sob*

I really want to get more involved with the American Diabetes Association and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. I believe one of them is having a walk here in Oklahoma City soon that we could participate in. And really, I would love to start some kind of parent/kid group of families affected by Type 1, because E would really benefit from knowing other kids in the same boat as he is.

School is going great!

The boys and Jenn are all doing very well in school. Things are terrific and they are learning a lot. E is writing his name well and beginning to recognize more letters. It is amazing how much he is learning!

We did get some sad and scary news, though. E has Type1 diabetes. It is kind of insane trying to get down a routine and understand what everything means, but I think I am getting it all down. His school is being great with everything and they are really on board with his treatment.

Jenn is wonderful. She is learning how to do it all too and has been at every doctors appointment. And really, E is INCREDIBLE. He is so brave and is just going with the flow. I am so glad that he didn't get sick and that it was just a "fluke" that it was discovered.
