Getting healthy

Ok. I was so good before the holidays. I was eating hardly any carbs, only one soda a day and no fast food. Fast-forward two months. I have gained back the weight I lost. I know that some of this is because of the knee surgery and not being able to move for several weeks. I am just now really getting the use back.

I went to the market this morning and bought pistachios, cheeses, some Hewbrew National's and some sliced turkey, sweet potatoes for baking, organic peanut butter, rice cakes, blueberries, DanActive, apples, pears, Tylenol Arthritis and a Women's multi-vitamin. Oh, and some tiramasu creamer for my coffee (my splurge).

Back to whole wheat pasta and no bread. Back to tons of chicken and fish and veggies. I know I will feel better and it will hopefully motivate me to get back to the YMCA to work out! Maybe I will go tonight and E can do the kids' class at 6:30pm. He loves that. Last night I took him up there and he played basketball in the gym for about 30 minutes. We had a parent meeting about soccer. He is so bummed that basketball is over. Soccer starts in a couple of weeks, though and hopefully he will love that because he is my little runner. I call him "Dash" because he is quick. Next year he will be old enough for track.

I sure don't want him to have to deal with a weight problem, especially on top of his diabetes. His sugar has been a little out of whack the past week. It's like we just cannot get it at a constant. It's either too high or too low. It's been frustrating.

Part of it is probably that we have been eating out a lot because Jenn has been swamped with school and homework. She is taking 15 hours this semester and it is just a LOT. Her accounting takes up tons of her time. Maybe I should go grocery shopping for her tonight?

Diabetes Team Meeting

We had to go to the school this afternoon and meet with the diabetes team. It went really well, actually and all the teachers are just right on board with E's diabetes care plan. It was great. The PE teacher sat in, too. There is another boy, who is K's age, who has diabetes, too. He has a pump and he was showing E how it worked and telling him how much he liked it and all.

I thought it was great to hear from his mom, too, how much they like it and how much easier it is. E has not been interested in a pump at all. But maybe now that he has seen a kid with one, he will think about it?

He has only seen adults with pumps before, so to see a kid with a pump was a good thing. What was so awesome, too, is that his glucose meter is bluetoothed to his pump, so when he checks his sugar, the information is automatically sent to the pump. Then he just puts in how many carbs he eats and the insulin is delivered through the site and into his body! Wow! I was impressed!

My Weekend

We have had the LONGEST weekend! But it was pretty good.

Jenn's sister and brother came up from Austin on Friday afternoon. We had a bbq Friday night and got up EARLY on Saturday morning to do the Diabetes Walk at the Zoo. The boys had a blast and our team ended up raising about $1100, so that was cool. It had rained and was VERY humid out, ugh. After that, we had some lunch and went to the pool to cool off for awhile. I slathered SPF 50 on both E and I, but we got too much sun on our cheeks, nose and shoulders.

When everyone went to White Water Bay on Sunday, E and I went to Chickasha to see my family. It was fun. We flew a kite, played in the spillway of the pond (they got a ton of rain) and saw my grandparents and 2 of my aunts. We didn't get home until late last night and I had to work this morning and the boys started swim lessons this morning too. Jenn's family is going home this afternoon, I think. It was good to see them.

HB 1309

I am really excited to see that this bill has passed committee and will go to a vote. It is called the "Diabetes Management in Schools Act". It is going to make sure that a diabetes management plan is in place at public schools for each student that has diabetes. It will also make sure that there is a designated, trained person to assist the students with their plans. Like at E's school, the nurse isn't full time and luckily his teacher has been great about learning how to check his sugar and looking for signs of hypoglycemia, but other than the training we have given her and the things she has read, that is all she knows. If he needs a shot, we have to go up there to give it to him.

We have had a lot of great support from E's school on his diabetes treatment, but I think that this is just another step toward making sure that there are trained personnel there to help kids with their treatment.

I was even happier to see that Rep. Winchester had co-authored the bill. She is a family friend. It means a lot to me and my family, personally, but it is a great stride in educating people about diabetes.

Type 1 Diabetes

My son was diagnosed September 1, 2006 with Type 1 Diabetes. We have been doing very good getting on a routine and he doesn't complain too much about all the finger pricks and the shots (but he only gets 1-2 shots a day right now).

Last night we were at the chinese restaurant we like to go to (his favorite) and he put a coin in the buddah and rubbed it's belly and said "I wish I didn't have diabetes". *sob*

I really want to get more involved with the American Diabetes Association and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. I believe one of them is having a walk here in Oklahoma City soon that we could participate in. And really, I would love to start some kind of parent/kid group of families affected by Type 1, because E would really benefit from knowing other kids in the same boat as he is.
